Beatrice Mary Bingham


Daughter of Thomas Percy Bingham and Julia Sophia Grossmann. .

Born in Melbourne, Australia around 1892, the fifty-fifth year of the reign of Queen Victoria, and died aged eighty-nine in Mexico City, Mexico in the twenty-ninth year of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II  She has 5 direct descendants in the family.

Nicaragua


Beatrice Mary Bingham was born in Melbourne, Australia, the fifth child of Thomas and Julia Bingley. Soon after, the family moved to Greytown in anticipation of the building of the Lower San Juan Canal connecting the Pacific and Atlantic oceans.

As Greytown had no adequate schools her mother taught the children at home - she was fluent in French, Spanish and Catalan.

New York

Mary was sent in 1916 to New York to study nursing at the Mont Sinai hospital in Manhattan.

Being bilingual, Mary was assigned at her hospital to care for Spanish-speaking patients. A Mexican friend introduced her to the engineer Juan Francisco Urquidi and they fell in love.
Mary was 24, Juan was 35 and running a monthly magazine in Spanish he had founded.

They married in Philadelphia in 1917.

General Sandino


Following the end of WW1 she and Juan spent a couple of years in London. Juan was then invited to take a diplomatic post for the Mexican Government in Paris and they spent the rest of their lives as a diplomatic couple in many different countries.
In 1929 Juan was the Mexican Government's representative in El Salvador at the time that General Sandino and his entourage needed safe passage through the country on his way from Nicaragua to exile in Mexico.
