The First Ada

The first recorded Ada thus far is Warren Ada, who was born in 1566 and lived in the village of Great Eversden in Cambridgeshire. As the village was famous for its apples and greengages and the records of the Ada family were recorded by Charles Fossey, whose family were in the fruit trade for several generations, our Adas have been classified as illiterate fruit pickers.

William Ada 1767-1837

We know a remarkable amount about William Ada, thanks to his profession. Customs & Excise kept copious records, and every time William was dropt (made redundant) and ordered back has been recorded in the records, now kept at Kew Records Office.

His son, William Ada, was also enlisted as an Exciseman, and with both having the same name and both operating in Kent at the same time, it took a lot of research to separate out the two careers.

The Last Ada

The last Ada in England was Gillian Ada, who never married and passed away in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, in November 2003.
