Joseph William Ada


Son of William Ada and Sophia Fletcher. .

Born in Alverstone, Isle Of Wight, England in 1853, the sixteenth year of the reign of Queen Victoria, and died aged ninety in Randwick, Sydney, Australia in the eighth year of the reign of King George VI  He has 34 direct descendants in the family.

To Canada and back


Went to Canada when he was 15 - to work with his brother William, then went back to England to learn the Manchester trade.

Then to Australia

In 1879, he emigrated to Australia, arriving in Melbourne, Australia, on board the Northumberland from Gravesend.

He married Frances Maria Merrington in Sydney in 1881.

Joseph Ada went into Farmers Ltd in the Manchester Dept. He had a difference with the Director and left, opening a shop in Newcastle.

He didn’t like being away from home so much as they had gone to live in Snails Bay, so he sold the business and opened a new shop in Glebe Point Road.

He died in Randwick in 1944
