Welsh upbringing


Annie was the daughter of Alexander Richardes, a Captain in the Royal Cardigan Militia, by his second wife, Margaret. Her own name came from her mother Anne Corbetta Hannah Maria who was a sister of Colonel Powell of Nanteos.
She was brought up in the family home, Plas Penglais on the Penglais estate, this home is now the residence of the Vice-Chancellor of Aberystwyth University and the estate itself forms part of the University.
